The Executive Governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, The Deputy Minority leader, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Toby Okechukwu, had on Friday evening, Visited the surviving Victims of the Enugu Trailer-School bus Auto-Crash, currently receiving treatments at the University of Nigeria, Teaching hospital, Ituku-Ozalla Enugu.

UGAMATV reported that Okechukwu had earlier Sympathized with the bereaved and prayed for the speedy recovery of the survivors of the Accident

UGAMATV had earlier reported that Tragedy struck in Awgu town of Awgu local government area of Enugu state, as a truck belonging to a Company, though yet to be identified, crashed into a long school bus bearing both Nursery and primary school pupils, as Well as Staff of the School, killing Many leaving few in Critical condition, UGAMATV reports.

The Fatal Collision between the truck and the School bus belonging to Presentation Nursery and Primary school, Awgu, an early years school owned by the catholic diocese of Awgu, was said to have occured between the hours of 4pm and 4:30pm, at Nkwo Awgu Junction in Awgu local government area of Enugu state.

UGAMATV learnt that the said company truck, which was plying the Oji-Awgu road, the Mmaku-Awgu axis, had a break failure and Charged into the School bus from a hill in Mmaku Awgu local government area of Enugu state.

An eye witness, Kingsley Ogbonna confirmed to UGAMATV that a Mechanic, Vulcanizer, Motorcyclist, Staff and numerous pupils of the School (numbers, yet to be certified) were confirmed dead in the scene of the accident.

Several others in severe conditions were however, rushed to the University of Nigeria teaching hospital, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu and Jideofor hospital Awgu Enugu, where they are currently battling with their lives.

FRSC NAMES DANGEROUS DRIVING AS CAUSE OF ENUGU TRAILER-SCHOOL BUS ACCIDENT

The Enugu Sector Commander, Mr Ogbonna Kalu, who confirmed the incidence to newsmen, on the telephone, said the accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon.

The commander blamed the accident on speeding beyond the limit and dangerous driving.

Kalu said, “21 persons have been confirmed dead and more than 50 persons were in the school bus.

“Also of note is that not all the deaths were school children. Those working on the roadside were part of the casualties.”

“From available information, the accident was caused by dangerous driving.”

DEPUTY MINORITY LEADER MOURNS VICTIMS OVER AWGU ROAD ACCIDENT, CALLS FOR INVESTIGATION

The Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Toby Okechukwu, has expressed sadness over the fatal road accident at Awgu town in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu School, which claimed the lives of several pupils of Presentation Nursery Primary School, Awgu on Wednesday.

Okechukwu, while reacting to the incident in a statement he released on Thursday, called for detailed investigation into the incident to establish the immediate and remote causes and recommend measures to be put in place to prevent such occurrences in the future.

The lawmaker, who represents Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency, condoled with the management, staff, and pupils of Presentation Nursery and Primary School Awgu as well as the Catholic Church and all those who loved their loved ones in the unfortunate incident.

“This is a very sad moment, not only to the school and the Catholic Diocese of Awgu, but also a personal loss to me, the people of Awgu, and Enugu State as a whole. My heartfelt condolences go particularly to parents and families of our children and other loved ones, who lost their lives.

“We will ensure that this unfortunate incident is properly investigated with a view to establishing the causes and to know how we can put a stop to things like this”, he said

He prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls of the dead and for the quick recovery of the wounded.

It is recalled that a truck belonging to a construction collided head-on with a long school bus at Nkwo Awgu junction on Wednesday as the driver lost lost control of the vehicle.

The accident, said to be as a result of break failure left many either dead or wounded although the exact numbers have not been made known yet.

UGWUANYI  OFFERS TO PAY ALL MEDICAL BILLS

Subsequently, after observing the state of health of the survivors, Ugwuanyi wished the school children and other survivors of the accident a quick recovery.

While consoling the parents of the Children, he encouraged them to have faith in God and his administration, as he will do anything possible to ensure that their full recovery.

The governor, therefore announced that the state government will take care of all their medical bills to any level and urged the management of the hospital to give the victims adequate medical attention.

He made this visit in the company of prominent Igbo leaders such as the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo; Member representing Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency, Hon. Cornelius Nnaji; Chairman, Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, Amb. Lawrence Agubuzu; wife of the former Premier of the Eastern Region and Nigeria’s first President, late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Prof Uche Azikiwe;

Leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), former Minister of Women Affairs, Chief Mrs. Josephine Anenih, Enugu State youth and student leaders, among others.

Other personalities who accompanied the governor were the Chief Whip of Enugu State House of Assembly and member representing Awgu North Constituency, Hon. Mrs. Jane Eneh, the Chairman of Awgu LGA, Hon. Pedro Nwankwo, the founding Director of Women’s Aid Collective (WACOL), Prof. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, etc.
