FG Moves to Establish Federal POLYTECHNIC, UNIVERSITY of Agriculture in Enugu

The Senate has introduced a Bill seeking to establish a federal university of agriculture in Enugu State.

The Bill, sponsored by former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, went through the First Reading during plenary on Tuesday.

Senator Ekweremadu, who represents Enugu West Senatorial District, said the Bill entitled “Federal University of Agriculture Mpu, Enugu State Establish Bill, 2021” was in tandem with the quest for a university in the District, being the only senatorial district in Enugu State without a university as well as with Federal Government’s efforts to boost agriculture.

It is recalled that Ekweremadu had sponsored a Bill for the establishment of a federal polytechnic in Enugu West, which was passed by the 7th and 8th National Assembly, but was not assented by the President.

He said that with President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s gracious decision to establish a Federal Polytechnic at Ohodo, Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, it had become imperative to now push for the establishment of a Federal University of Agriculture in the State, particularly in Enugu West.

While appreciating President Buhari and congratulating Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and the people of Ohodo community on the Federal Polytechnic Ohodo, the lawmaker, however, said the Federal University of Agriculture Mpu, when established, would not only boost human capital development in the South East, serving particularly Enugu and Anambra States, but also serve as additional impetus for agricultural revolution, food security, and economic diversification.
