Messi puts Pichichi within reach with Getafe double

An eighth Pichichi trophy is well in Lionel Messi‘s sights after  his double against Getafe on Thursday night.

The Argentine moves on to 25 goals for the season in LaLiga Santander, putting himself four goals clear of Karim Benzema in the scoring charts. Gerard Moreno is back on 20, while Luis Suarez has 19.

Having finished top scorer in Spain’s top tier in 2009/10, 2011/12, 2012/13, 2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20, Messi is on course for an eighth Pichichi of his career.

Getafe also became the seventh team in LaLiga Santander to concede a double to Messi this season after Athletic Club, Granada, Alaves, Elche, Huesca and Real Sociedad.

Messi‘s first goal against Getafe came in the eighth minute of the game, which is his fastest strike of the season so far in LaLiga Santander.

He has scored earlier into a Champions League game, though, finding the net in the fifth minute against Dynamo Kiev in the group stage.

What’s more, Messi was scoring against one of his favourite opponents on Thursday, having notched 15 goals from 24 meetings with Getafe before.
