Umahi defection: Ebonyi PDP seeks police protection, alleges threat to members

The Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has appealed to the Inspector-General of Police and heads of other security agencies to step up security in and around the state.

The Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the PDP in the state, Chief Fred Udeogu, said the call became necessary in the light of growing threat to its members by persons suspected of acting at the behest of the state government.

Udeogu said this at a media briefing held at the National Secretariat of the PDP, in Abuja, on Friday.

The party chairman said, “We wish to use this opportunity to call on the Inspector-General of Police, the Director of State Security Services to protect members and legitimate officers of the PDP in Ebonyi State, and hold Governor Dave Umahi accountable for any breakdown of law and order in Ebonyi State.

“Governor Dave Umahi’s goal is to control the PDP and the APC in Ebonyi State, by sheer brute force. But the good people of Ebonyi State who are predominantly members of the PDP, are not prepared to be victims of brute force and dictatorship, and will continue to fight for their political freedom.”

However, the All Progressives Congress in Ebonyi State, on Friday, said that members of the PDP in the state were merely making baseless allegations.

The state APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, Chief Stanley Okoro-Emegha, who stated during an interview with our correspondent, on Friday, said both Umahi and the state government had nothing to do with the PDP again.

Okoro-Emegha said, “This is a laughable allegation because Governor David Umahi is no longer in the PDP and has no business whatsoever in the PDP and its members. Anyone in the PDP is there on his own and not for Umahi, because he has since moved to the APC. Of course, party differences should not be equated with personal relationships. If there is anything going on between the governor and anybody in the PDP, it’s on personal grounds and that has nothing to do with the party. And if  anybody is saying that Umahi wants to dominate both the APC and the PDP in EBonyi State, that person is making a laughable allegation.

He alleged that the deluge of unending litigation against the PDP in Ebonyi was a state sponsored attempt to derail the party.

The chairman said, “A summary of the history of this suit, No. HAB/161/2020 is that three Ebonyi State High Court judges have recused themselves from handling the case.”
