The Academic Staff Union of University, University of Ibadan branch has disassociated itself from the protest on Friday by some university workers against the process of selection of the next Vice-Chancellor of the university.
The protesters had condemned the alleged plan by Prof. Idowu Olayinka, the VC, to impose Prof. Kayode Adebowale, his deputy as his successor.
Barring all odds, the protesters insisted that Olayinka’s successor and one other candidate must be excluded from the selection process.
A bulletin dated October 30, signed by the chairman of ASUU, University of Ibadan, Ayoola Akinwole, read that “Having observed that a protest was carried out on Wednesday, October 28, around the Senate and Council Chambers of the University by members of the NASU and SSANU in the University of Ibadan, the executive of the branch on Friday deliberated on the incidence and resolved that members of ASUU-UI were not part of the protest contrary to reports in some outlets.
“We condemn in strongest terms the disruption of the meeting of the governing council of the University of Ibadan that was convened to conclude the selection of the next Vice-Chancellor of the university that the practice of the protesters, assaulting, attempt assault or outright molestation of members of the Academic Staff Union of the university, UI branch, shall henceforth be vehemently resisted.
“Re-affirms our earlier appeal to the governing council of the University of Ibadan that a level playing ground be given in the appointment of the next Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan in order to protect the sanctity of the university autonomy.”
