We don’t post corpers to volatile areas – NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps has said it does not post prospective corps members to areas with heightened insecurity.

The Director, Press and Public Relations, NYSC, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi made this know on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to Punch Place, headquarters of Punch Nigeria Limited, Magboro, Ogun State.

Adeyemi, who said she was representing the NYSC Director-General, Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, explained that the agency was very sensitive to issues around security.

She stressed that the NYSC was now approving the redeployment to prospective corps members based on marital and health statuses as well as security considerations.

“We are very sensitive about security and we ensure that we do not post corps members to areas where insecurity is heightened, and if we post them to anywhere that is tough or where the parents say no to because of insecurity, we will redeploy them. It appears that the public does not have the full information about this,” Adeyemi stated.

Speaking on the strategies that NYSC had been using to curtail the spread of COVID-19 at its camps, she explained that the multiple streams and batches were introduced to reduce the population and obey the social distancing protocol.

Adeyemi stated, “We went into collaboration with the NCDC and before any staff is allowed into the camps, they are usually tested and if they test positive, they are immediately handed over to the NCDC. It is after we have all gone through the test that we now go in and then the prospective corps members also go through the process.

“We decided to have batches A, B and C and streams one to two so as to reduce camp capacity due to the new normal. The streams may be removed when lifestyles go back to normal. These are just responses we put in place due to COVID-19 guidelines.”

She also hinted that the camping activities did not involve just drilling and other paramilitary activities but the agency had introduced entrepreneurial activities as a way to curb the unemployment problem in the country.
